Templosion
We are living through a time of constant and accelerating change. Technological innovation is happening at breakneck speed and technologies are leapfrogging each other at a quickening pace. A term to encapsulate these disruptive changes is: Templosion. Templosion refers to the idea that the biggest of events are happening in shorter and shorter periods. Everything from corporate lifespans to strategic and financial planning cycles to how we communicate is becoming more truncated. Time is being truncated, and our experience of time is in overdrive.
The circumstances of the last few years also served as an accelerant for several previously developing trends (e.g., the rise of hybridized and distributed work; increased use of AI, etc.). It also magnified existing issues such as the limits of short-term thinking, evolving technology, and the impact of various supply chain disruptions. While these shifts are making it harder to adapt and respond in near real-time, they also represent unique opportunities to rethink the way we’ve always done things using novel strategies and competitive advantages.
The AI Revolution
AI, right now, is at the heart of this. Not only will AI drive the creation of entirely new business efficiencies in the industry, but it will also reshape how we think about our value proposition…as humans. The interrelationship between us and AI will not be just about disintermediation but rather augmentation – and that augmentation will give rise to completely new human-centric skills and competencies. Everything from customer service to data integration to improved performance will be transformed. But ultimately, the industry has a blank canvas with which to experiment. A critical aspect of this is trust. To realize the full potential of AI, trust needs to be built into the system – and that includes tapping into human oversight and human judgment.
But trust goes beyond technology. There is a growing vacuum of trust today, and that vacuum is giving new urgency not just to transparency but honesty in everything from ESG principles to employment practices to values and ethics. Building trust will be an ongoing process and will increasingly have to be seen as an intrinsic guiding principle.
We wake up every morning to a new reality, a new challenge, a new solution, and a new future. We all will face the pressing need to question all we do, how we do it, and how we survive, compete, and thrive individually and organizationally. The term “innovation” has morphed in many ways to mean linear progression. But today, what becomes critical is liberating your thinking to push away any perceived impediments or obstacles. Even if what you come up with may seem unrealistic or implausible, it gets you thinking more bravely and more positively about possible futures.
Ultimately, the businesses set to win in the future will be those with the discipline to engage in truly long-term thinking. It’s not about keeping up or keeping pace with your competitors/others in your industry. It’s about finding your unique value proposition. In a time of change, we all need to challenge the way we see the world, leave past assumptions behind, and reimagine what the future could look like.
