Redefining success: What hockey taught me about leadership in business
Talent Development
May 29, 2025We were privileged to welcome three-time Olympic medallist Sami Jo Small to our recent Women’s Leadership Summit in Austin. The former goaltender for hockey’s Team Canada shared an inspiring story of resilience, purpose, and team spirit. Read Sami Jo’s powerful reminder that success is measured not just in wins, but in how we lift others.

I spent most of my life on the ice, playing for Team Canada as a goaltender. I had the chance to compete in three Olympics and stand alongside some of the greatest teammates I’ll ever know.
But while my sport looked like it was about gold medals and shutouts, what I really learned was something different. I learned how to lead, adapt, and show up for others even when the spotlight is not on you.
That lesson has carried me far beyond the rink. Recently, I had the privilege of sharing my story with PrimeGlobal’s incredible women during their Leadership Summit in Austin. We talked about resilience, about lifting each other up, and about defining our own version of success. One that’s not just based on outcomes but on impact.
In my sport, I had been the starting goaltender leading into the Olympic Games. But when it came time for the gold medal final, I was told I wouldn’t be playing. It was heartbreaking.
Still, I knew I had a role to play.
I showed up for my teammates, stayed engaged on the bench, and tried to be the support they needed. It wasn’t easy, but afterward, I was proud of the role I played. Not because it was the one I wanted, but because I leaned into what the team needed from me.
That story resonates with so many of the women I meet in boardrooms and breakout sessions. We don’t always get to choose the role we play, but we always get to choose how we play it.
In accounting and advisory roles, where so much of the work happens behind the scenes, that mindset is powerful. Whether it’s managing complex audits or guiding clients through uncertainty, your influence often shows up in the success of others.
What I admire most about the PrimeGlobal community is the commitment to collaboration. You aren’t just crunching numbers. You’re building trust, solving problems, and making the complicated feel possible.
That’s a lot like what great teams do. You win not because of one superstar, but because everyone understands their role and brings their strengths to the table.
At the conference, we also talked about mentorship and the ripple effect of lifting others. Just like my teammates helped me find pride in every role I played, you can do that for someone else. Your voice, your experience, and your encouragement can be the difference between someone doubting themselves and stepping up with confidence.
So whether you are starting out in your career or sitting in a leadership chair, I hope you remember this. Success is not only measured by titles or transactions. It’s how you support your team, the integrity in your work, and the moments when you show up fully, Even if you’re not in the spotlight.
Thank you to PrimeGlobal for inviting me to be a part of your journey. It was a joy to be in a room full of strong, passionate, and purpose-driven leaders.
