How would you describe the health of the accounting industry in the Netherlands in terms of customer demand, fee pressure, and staff recruitment and retention?
The biggest challenge for accountancy firms is recruiting and retaining staff. In general, there is a shortage of financials, including accountants, in The Netherlands. A growing number of companies required by law to audit their financial statements cannot find an accountant. As a result, firms' fees and hence revenues are rising.
Are there any services areas where demand has grown over the last 12 months?
In general all service areas show an increase of revenues, but especially the Audit related services.
Has there been any significant consolidation or merger activity in the accounting profession?
We experience an increasing involvement of private equity in the sector. The top 30 accounting firms, besides the big 4/5, are particularly targeted.
Have there been any significant regulatory developments in the Netherlands over the last 12 months? What are your expectations for the next 12 months - are there any potentially significant developments in the pipeline?
Accounting firms are preparing for the new CSRD legislation. Larger clients are required to report on their ESG developments to be audited. An interesting new service line ahead!
